Popular Edmonton Wedding Photographer Locations
By: David Mathew Bonner www.dmbvp.com
Over the years, I have shot weddings at almost every spot imaginable in Edmonton. To be honest, most wedding parties are limited in areas to shoot. When dealing with large groups and a lot of family, you want to have a place that is easily accessible, lots of parking and a variety of backdrops with proper exposure from the high afternoon sun. Generally, most weddings end up at the same locations and the most popular locations are as follows..
#1 The Alberta Legislature grounds.
With amazing front steps that have perfect afternoon exposure and is large enough to pose the biggest of wedding parties, the Leg grounds is the most popular spot. A lot of family's meet by the front steps and do the formals and then work to the back of the building for some shots in the park. Best of all, it is free.
#2 Royal Alberta Museum & Government House.
Great location, easy access and lots of parking makes this an ideal location for formal wedding photography. With an excellent blend of landscaping and architecture details, the Museum grounds provide lots of visual variety within a relatively small area. There is also no cost to use the grounds.
#3 Devonian Botanic Gardens
A short distance from the city, the Gardens provides a little escape from the hustle and bustle. All though challenging at times for some less experienced photographers to get good exposure in high noon, the garden has a certain charm to it. There is a cost and it must be booked in advanced. It is also a short drive out of the city, but there are refreshments and lots of parking. Overall, it is a nice alternative.
Here is a popular wedding video I produced with a lot of footage that was shot at the gardens. It is in windows media format.
Central location, great afternoon espouser, large steps for bigger wedding parties, beautiful park setting with benches and gazebo, and meter parking make this an ideal stop for wedding photography. There is a nice variety of shots possible and even though it is a small location, most experienced photographers are able to work around each other.
The south side of the hotel is amazing for larger group shots and couple shots as well. Light can be an issue during the high noon sun but experienced photographers are able to work around it. Here is another wedding video I produced that has a lot of the Hotel Mac in it.
Other note worthy options for larger groups, that also offer shelter from the weather are
City Hall
The Citadel Theatre
The Muttart Conservatory.
One last place worth mentioning, that has time limitations, is Fort Edmonton Park.
A great place for both Reception and Photos. My wife and I had our wedding and reception there.
Of course, I have a video.
My personal preference for wedding day photography is to have your wedding photographer arrange to take the larger group shots at one of the places mentioned above, and then spend some time with just the wedding party cruising the city, taking random shots downtown and, on Whyte Avenue. Find hidden corners of the city, loading docks, fire escapes and everyday things that in the eye of an artist become remarkable when you look through the lens and not with your eyes. Having trust in your photographers creativity will allow him or her to make the day rememberable and your wedding photos uniquely yours.
